Decide how it will be displayed

Check the complete dimensions, including ears, hanging loop and any projecting pieces. Compare the weight and attachment method with the intended branch, stand or hook. An ornament shown hanging in a photograph may not include the hook or ribbon. Ask what is supplied and use the maker's display instructions rather than choosing a fastening only because it matches the colour.

Consider how the design is seen when it turns. Some ornaments have artwork on one side and a plain reverse; others have text that reads correctly from only one direction. If it will hang freely, look at both faces. For a personalised item, check whether the name remains clear beside the breed illustration and whether the date will still make sense in later years.

Think about the box before buying

Identify where the ornament will be stored and whether it needs an individual compartment. Fragile ears, feet and thin plaques may need protection from pressure rather than simply a soft wrapping. Keep the original fitted packaging if it works for repeated storage, but inspect it for dampness or deterioration before reusing it. For a gift, check whether the recipient has space for that protective box as well as the ornament itself.

Measure the stored shape including any protective case. A few oversized decorative objects can quickly fill a seasonal box, especially when each has a different projecting outline. Choose a storage place where the box can remain supported and dry. Avoid placing heavier decorations above a fragile personalised item merely because the box closes.

Make the annual reset careful

Inspect the hanging loop and the piece itself when unpacking. Check for cracks, loosened parts and worn cord before display. Clean only by the method specified for its material and finish. A painted, printed or layered ornament may not tolerate soaking or the same cleaner used on an undecorated object.

Keep ornaments away from the dog's access and do not treat a breed-shaped decoration as a toy. Put the care details and order information in the storage box if they are useful. At the end of the season, let the item dry completely after any permitted cleaning, then pack it with its hanging parts secured. A small label on the compartment can prevent hurried stacking next year.
